Speaking Exam
Sample Speaking Examination
THE SPEAKING EXAM
The SPEAKING EXAMINATION will encompass the entire period (for the class; two if needed) and should adequately test the student’s ability to demonstrate English-speaking proficiency.
PART I: Formal English
Students will draw from a folder ONE of five one-half page writings in formal English, either developed by the teacher or from outside sources. The student has thirty seconds to look over the material and then must read. Students are given a maximum of two efforts.
PART II: Informal English
Students will draw from a folder ONE of five one-half page writings in informal English, either developed by the teacher or from outside sources. The student has thirty seconds to look over the material and then must read. Students are given a maximum of two efforts.
Due to time and space constraints, the exam is comparatively shorter, but may in fact prove more difficult. Also, size of class will be considered. EACH section will be scored as follows: 10, outstanding speaking skills with very slight errors; 9, outstanding speaking skills with larger errors; 8, very good speaking skills with some noticeable errors; 7, good speaking skills with some large errors; 6, speaker has trouble conveying meaning; 5, speaker reads the complete passage, but with little effort; 4, speaker does not complete the passage; 3, speaker does not choose to speak at assigned time; 2, speaker has an unexcused absence on the day of the exam.
Students are scored accordingly.
